Colder farming...

Charlemont Farm by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

Was a little cooler this morning, tuck-yer-thumb-in cold. Warmed up once I was off the Newton Road and out of the wind a little.

Legs felt okay striding out, but not really puffing and panting too much.

Listened to @marathontalk podcast which was highly enjoyable, change from the radio.

Just starting to spittle a little when I got back so good timing there!

Go fly a bleedin'...

Broadway by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

Woke up well today. Felt good and was awake well before the alarm listening to the wind outside. It was blowing a bleeding gale!

Seemed like most of the quite circular route of the Broadway run was against a headwind -how's that work then?!

Head said easy run but mind said TEMPO! Especially inspired after last weeks record breaking coverage of this route. Opened the stride up nicely and soon got going. But this week was not near the pace of last weeks as the wind, more miles and me feeling more tired than last week went against a really fast time.

Although I can't and won't grumble at 7:22's.

Very mild and warm again after yesterdays coldness.

++Week five..still alive..just!++

So Week 5 was a building week.
Milage upped and back onto the serious stuff!

It was planned as a R, 8, 6, 8, R, 18, 8

Monday was a rest day, always a good start to the week!
Tuesday was my favourite Broadway route. After not running for two days and feeling really good off the back of the rest week I flew round! I PB'd the route by some minute and a half I think. MrGarmin informed me that I'd averaged 6:60 (honest!) a mile. So that'd be 7 min miling then?! :o)
Wednesday was a gentle run in the darkdark through Charlemont Farm.
Thursday was dreaded speed work. This was longer efforts but still aiming for the same speed bracket. I missed, a lot.But I felt like I'd worked so maybe that's the point?
Friday was an actual rest day instead of a run with Rich.

Saturday was an 18 miler.
I think I set off too slow on this as the pace didn't happen. Wasn't after a fast run but wasn't expecting the 8:34av either really.
Had really bad stomach cramps around 6 miles in. Coincidentally around the entrance to Sutton Park...handy that! Cue my first ever Gingerbread Man! (@JWUltra...you're a bad influence. Must  take tissue next time though! Autumn leaves are not exactly Andrex soft if you get me?! TMI? LOL!)
The rest of the run was okay. Had enough fluid, but would have liked peace of mind to carry more (see below!)
Also need to experiment more with different gels. Taking more and trying different ones.  At the moment I really like and get on with the Decathlon ones, but I'm wondering what the alternatives are? There must be something more readily available, and a sight cheaper, that I could try that isn't going to upset my stomach but still give me an energy boost and make me feel like I've had some sugar?
Dried Fruit? Cereal bars?
Perhaps some knowledgeable Ultra runner will pass over this and leave a comment! PLEASE!

Sunday was an 8 mile recovery/shake down run. These have been hard to fit in and motivate myself to do lately. But this week I did, in style. Reminded me what its all about this running thing, please do read it if you can. A special bit of time with some special people. Read it here...

Anyroad, Christmas is coming and Santa needs to get his Ass in gear!
I've asked for this..

It's a Camelbak Octane XCT with a 2 litre bladder and most importantly side pockets. Not many of the back pack hydration packs have this feature. Would seem to be quite sensible really...phone, gels, STUFF! Back packs are not something I've ever really tried. I have the Nike Bottle waist carrier at moment and thats okay but not enough water for longer runs and not much storage capacity really.

I've also requested a new cheapo running phone that has a camera, mp3 storage and a radio. Nowt flash but something that I won't panic about getting wet and bashed etc as my sacred iPhone4 would not suffer the indignity of it all!
This neat little Samsung seems to fit the bill, reckon

I've also been a bit partial to this daft t-shirt...

Quite fitting that in more ways than one!

So what's on your Xmas running wish list then?

Sunday 27 November 2011

++Week Four off the floor...++

So this being week 4 it's a lighter week of running designed to give your body chance to recover from the stresses of the previous weeks training. This was one thing that really appealed to me about the plan. It almost seemed sensible!

So... R, 7, 5, 7, R, 14, 5...

Tuesday through the Valley was dark but good.
Wednesday was the straight forward out n back of the Newton Road.
Thursday a twisty course of through Charlemont Farm in the darkdark and back round up Dartmouth hill.
Friday was a Rest day and actually was as Rich couldn't run.
And then there was Saturday....

Well actually there was Friday night first. We were all out at a family party outside of Wolverhampton celebrating till late. VERY late. I'd stayed tee-total all night as I knew I wanted to run the next day and not have a sore head.
But we got to bed at 1:30am and 3 and a 1/2 hours later I got up to meet up with #TNSG in Sutton Park. I actually felt fine and enjoyed the whole adventure of seeing if my body was up to it (it was). I even remained fairly alert through the day as well...apart from nearly falling asleep through the Small Monstrositys Orchestra concert!!

However the next day was scheduled a 5 mile shake down run. I was cold, tired and REALLY not feeling it. So I didn't. Feeling no guilt I just said 'no' I don't want to run today. Good decision.

But to sum up, the rest week thing works. I feel good, the legs feel good and not as sore.

Now, about this week 5 thingy coming up...gulp!

Shake it, shake it, shake it BABY!

Shake Down Run by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

What a great way to do a shake down run...
3.5 miles run/walk with the Boss and then 5 miles with the Small Monstrosity on his bike.
Not for ages have I enjoyed a run as much.

The Small Monstrosity spent all his miles rabbiting away happily about all sorts of stuff. Apart from when he lost concentration and rode into a wall and I caught him before he went on to the main road! Heart Attack!

I ran slowly, then quickly.
I walked and chatted.
I stopped and drank and made the SM drink.
The sun was shining, it was wicked windy on some bits and beautifully quiet running through the park on others.
The canal was windy and quiet as we passed over.
There was no point when I thought 'this is a bind and I hope its over soon.'
All I really needed was the miles, no speed, no pace just miles in the legs to get them to go after yesterdays 18 miler.

The planned route was changed on a whim when the SM wanted to go through the park to spot his big brother playing football - so we did! For 6 laps to make up the miles!
But it didn't matter, it was all good.

The SM is down stairs collapsed watching TV, the Boss is in the bath recovering.

All is good with the Running Gods...

Run, run as slow as you can...

LSR - PerryBarr,CollegeRd,SuttonRd,Broadway by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

Well this was slow and unexpectedly tough really. Not sure what to make of it?

Had a first - Gingerbread Man in Sutton park as stomach was cramping up a storm...it wasn't afterwards! I blame @jwultra. He's a bad influence!

Nothing felt particularly hard. Hills were hills etc but it all felt like a bit of work really.
Took a gel over three separate stages and that seemed to be good. May need to vary the liquid maybe?

Let's see what next week's brings?

Speedwork session fail...ish

Speedwork - Broadway by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

Still hating the speedwork! Such a drag first thing in the morning.

Struggled with the warm up miles to keep them to pace this morning-if only the rest had gone so quick!
They were too fast at 7:32av and should have been 7:45-8:00, but that was only the start.

Felt like I was striding out with the intervals but evidently I wasn't striding enough. The angry wasp was well in existence from MrGarmin. I only hit one of my 4 reps in the right zone.
At worse I was 34 seconds out!

No excuises (was a hilly course!) just will keep this course and this session for a few more weeks and see if I can improve on it.

Dash in the Dark...

Charlemont Farm by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

Easy pace run today.

Still with twingy neck/ shoulder though. Didn't really notice running but still there now.

Temperature took a plummet today to 4oC so 2 layers, winter is a-coming methinks?! Had t-shirt and long sleeve top to keep warm. Wasn't that bad but sensible reckon. Still not gloves and hat weather yet though.

Run wise fine, but did scare mesel coming over the railway section! Bleedin dark it were. I'd just turned off the lit road onto the gated pitch dark lane. Only a short section so never bother with a headtorch really. As I got onto it I thought I saw a torch light ahead, but no figure. Got to it and there was nobody there. Reckon it was the reflection of the motorway lights in a puddle!

Just got mesel to pysche up for speedwork tomorrow now.

Pace looping...

Broadway Loop by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

Feeling very inspired by Mr W's race last Sunday! So today went out treating this as a tempo run at pace. Felt more inclined to make an effort on this course as for some reason I've always liked the 'loopy' quality of it!!

Glad I did make that effort though!

Weather crept up on me as it quite suddenly went from damp and drizzly to WET! But got back okay and excited to go check whether that was a PB!

Watch this space!

STOPPRESS: Turns out it was a new PB by at least a minute! Pleased with that.

3 and a 1/2 hours zzzzzzzz

Sutton Park by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

So after 3.5 hours sleep I find myself in Sutton park with #TNSG...

First lap was lots of fun and feeling well but did drink a lot more than usual. Seemed to help.

Second lap just lifted and apart from one mile split where I, ahem, 'made a stop' for the first time ever!-took off with a positive negative split with some decent pace towards the end. Either way it was all good.

Cooler but still firm underfoot and a real low lying cold mist about. Great as the sun came up.

Down on the farm..

Charlemont farm, Dartmouth by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

Was a mite warmer today. Quite ok really, especially towards the end when it got real mizzly..like drizzle, but not as pronounced!

Hills felt good today, running through the dark of the railway was okay.

The only spoiler was that damn Nickleback song coming on the radio! That was a moment of silence I can tell you!

Easy run, good pace, feeling well considering I didn't want to get out of bed - unusual for me...

Wednesday 16 November 2011

Down one, cross one

Newton Rd by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

Straight out n back today.
Nothing complicated, unless you count crossing over the road and coming back on the opposite side?!

Felt like I was taking it easier today, as should be. So quite pleased to see 7:49 av. Was expecting nearer 8.

Was a little cooler today, but not too bad.
Warmer long sleeves the order of the day!

Tuesday 15 November 2011

Lo, as I run through the Valley...

Valley by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

Seven miler through the Valley with the Headtorch.

Was okay, warmer than I thought it was going to be...still!

Pace was settled until I met this bloke bouncing along quite well.
Caught him up from behind and announced my presence (he had headphones on) - nowt. Waved as I drew alongside - nowt!
He COMPLETELY blanked me! Never before had it. Not a wave, nod or acknowledgement.

So I stepped on it and blew him into the weeds! Sub 7 mile that one and worth it! Git!

Saw my nice lady runner and SHE waved and spoke.

Doesn't take an effort to be pleasant!

Sunday 13 November 2011

++I wanna be Week Treeee...++

So the week was shaping up to be the first of the 'heavier' weeks on the plan. More miles, more effort.

It looked like this R, 8, 5, 8, R, 16, 6.

Per usual it didn't get to BE like that!

Tuesday had me on my familiar and liked 8 mile loop, nice to get back to it, although it could have gone better...

Wednesday had me determined to get me Ass into gear a little. So I ran a hilly 2.5 mile loop twice. Much better.

Thursday was dreaded Speedwork day. Exactly the same as last week, but ran the splits better. Need to add minutes to them for week after next.

Friday was a run out with Rich after work. At least it was drier this week than last! not difficult I know! Rich has started training with local club Cobra AC on a Tuesday night. I think this may be paying off as he ran much better and more consistently over a familiar course as well.
However it was the surprise sprint to the finish that really got me! He beat me home with a great turn of speed. However I will maintain that I only lost due to the faffing about of the woman in the bus stop deciding exactly how she was going to get out of my way...or not! But lots of fun and he ran hard.

Saturday is meant to be long run day but I was busy at the Classic Car show all day...

(That's me...wearing clothes! Not running gear! With Mr Mike Brewer from TV's 'Wheeler Dealers'. Brilliant show, brilliant man. Very patient and gracious. Second time I've met him. Smashing!)

...so it got shifted to Sunday instead...

With a look at the weather forecast it said warm so I went out in a t-shirt - and felt GREAT! Really strong really stepping out and appreciating the training in my legs I think? The routes never easy. Long and hilly, very steep in places.
I stopped off to top up the water bottle in Sutton park as taught by @madlot1 and @ jwultra !
Took a High 5 gel at 10 miles. Mainly as it was in the house (freebie). What a load of rubbish! Tasted like water and pretty much the same consistency I reckon. Shame as their tablets for drinks (a la Nuun) were very good. Felt a little naturally tired towards the end, but considering I was aiming for 8:15 - 8:00 every time I looked at the watch it was around the 7:44 mark. All good.
Finished up starving and thirsty, had a bath (Radox time!) ate (Aldi Cookie crisp are great recovery food, I've decided!) and now typing this with the window open and the sun bouncing around I'm convincing family to get out and go for a toddle around Sutton Park...let's hope it happens!

This week is a lighter training week ahead (fourth week) and NO SPEEDWORK! Yay!
Let's go...!

November t-shirt...

Kingstanding, Sutton Rd by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

Felt really strong on the run today...

Stopped within the first mile to talk with next door neighbour, very pleasant didn't stop the watch...didn't think much of it.
But that statistic from the first mile threw my average right down!
Every time I looked it was hovering around the 7:44 mark, even uphill - the Sutton Rd Hill for pities sake!

Oh well..was a good run and felt strong.
Done!

Friday 11 November 2011

Beaten...not stirred!

Langley School Run by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

A cooler night tonight to be out running.
But thankfully MUCH drier than last weeks 'Swimathon!'

Went up the Wolvo Rd ok, nowt to write home about.
The run through Bearwood was good, but then the Thimblemill hill was VERY good for Rich...I should have been suspicious!

Long story short - he beat me home!
For the first time ever!
I had a stride out about a 3/4 mile out from home, next thing I knew he was there on my shoulder...and flying!
We then set about!
Flew down the one side street and just as Lil Mini was in sight he kicked, I followed but then went through a Bus Stop and a moments hesitation gave him the space!

Well done him mind..and check out the last .9 compared to the rest!

Good laugh!

Speedin' to work...

Speedwork - Broadway Cut by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

I was aiming to add a few minutes to the splits this week. But didn't get time to program it up properly so did the same workout as last week.

Not sure whether it felt easier?
Splits were better, and nearly hit them all apart from the last uphill killer! The recoveries were slow, but thats not a problem really, not something I'm concerned about. I quite like @jwultra's quote about the sloow being too fast and the fast being too slow in session work. A good mantra.

Bleedin' rained on me as well! Hadn't foreseen that and i checked the forecast!

Ne'er mind, its over for another week!

Loop the Loop...

Dartmouth x2 by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

Determined to go out today and kick yesterdays slow pace into the bushes.

Hmmmmm...

Wasn't actually going to run this morning but having worked out how the week looked training wise decided it'd be good. Need to be careful that Fridays run in company doesn't over train me and that I get proper rest time.

Did the double Dartmouth instead of the Newton for a change for 5 miles. You do get lots of downhill, but you also get the tremendous uphill, twice!

The splits tell a better story than the av...but you know what they say about statistics...

Tuesday 8 November 2011

Return to the Loop

Broadway loop by jules_perox at Garmin Connect - Details

So a welcome return one of my favourite and most ran routes.

So why do the numbers say 'slow?'

It felt okay and even quick at the end, but an 8av for this route and distance is a bit disappointing really. Mile splits are terrible! I don't tend to run 8:10's let alone a first mile of 8:45 on me own!!

Depressed!

Sunday 6 November 2011

++Week tooooo...++

So a strong weeks training then?

This week was a R, 7, 5, 7, R,14, 6.

It all kind of went to plan except...there's always an 'except'..

Well I went to see Bill Bailey at the NEC Tuesday night and there was no way I was getting up the next morning at 4:53am to get out for 5 miles. Sure enough, I didn't.
However I did start the dreaded SPEEDWORK this week! As part of the 7 miler on Thurday - 2.5, 3x4min @6:30-6:50 with 1 min recovery, 3 miles home. I STILL HATE SPEEDWORK!

Friday's social get out/ end of the week run was marred by torrential rain. After a mile into an 8 miler we were both soaked through. So it turned into an out n back 5 mile tempo run. Or - Run as fast as you can home to avoid getting any more wet!

Saturday morning found me in the park in the dark with #TNSG, dogs and headtorches again. Funnily Madlot turned up with a Lenser H7...except better, of course! Rechargeable. Made me realise that I need to put some new batteries in mine, then realised it'd be as good to buy a couple of sets of rechargeables.
Run was wet muddy and a good laugh as always. Plenty of banter and plenty of 'informed' discussion around running. Always good.
I went on to do a second lap on my own. Not as much fun, but muddier and splashier(honest @madlot1 !!) as I was no longer that worried about dry feet. Pace increased a little but not dramatically. Felt good and recovered well.
Which was just as well...

I returned home to find the Boss kitted out in sporty looking gear. Turned out she'd decided to go do some Red House laps. So I said I'd go with her. She did well. Ran one side of the square and did 4 laps run/walk.

Today was the shake down run. 6 miles of slowness just to get the legs running when they're meant to be tired. To be honest they felt okay. Whether this run feels the same once I'm doing 18 miles+ is another matter.

In other news I've decided to have a pair of these..

These are Salomon Crossmax Guidance. A multi terrain trainer. I'm thinking that they'd be good for running to the Park and then running on trails. As well as grip I'm wanting a bit more protection through the sole. The trails in SP aren't particularly technical but they're rocky and these tend to go right through the soles of the Adrenalines and bruise me feet!

So money is being saved!

Apart from that, still enjoying the freedom of race diary...but thinking towards January...and this maybe...

We shall see...sorry...'negotiate!'
